The Florence Nightingale £2 marks two anniversaries that fell in 2010: the centenary of her death and 150 years since the publication of her book Notes on Nursing. The royal proclamation that set its design names both events, which is why the reverse carries her dates and the edge refers to nursing.
The proclamation was given at Buckingham Palace on 15 October 2009 and came into force the next day. The Royal Mint's figures record 6,175,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2010. That is close to the 6,890,000 standard Technology £2 coins of the same date, and only seven commemorative £2 designs in the Mint's figures have a higher total.
The reverse is by Gordon Summers, described by the Royal Mint as its Design Team Leader and Engraver. It shows a nurse's hands taking the pulse of a patient. The proclamation describes the background as a texture of lines symbolising rays of light from a lamp; the lamp itself is not shown.
Around the design run the dates and name 1820, FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, 1910 and the denomination TWO POUNDS. The edge is milled and carries the incuse inscription 150 YEARS OF NURSING.
