History and design
RRS Discovery is the wooden research ship that carried Robert Falcon Scott south in 1901 on the British National Antarctic Expedition, with Ernest Shackleton among his officers. The Royal Mint issued this £2 in 2025 for what it calls the ship's 125th anniversary, together with the centenary of the Discovery Oceanographic Expedition. It is the first United Kingdom coin dedicated to the vessel, and was developed with the assistance of Dundee Heritage Trust.
The ship was built by the Dundee Shipbuilding Company, a yard known for whalers able to withstand Arctic ice, with a triple-skinned hull of pitch pine, greenheart and oak. The Royal Mint describes it as the first purpose-built scientific research vessel in the world.
The coin was not struck for circulation. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage data, which records no £2 coins of any design for 2025.
The reverse is by Gary Breeze, whom the Royal Mint describes as a keen sailor and boat builder. The proclamation sets out the design as RRS Discovery with a whale tail and two penguins, accompanied by the inscription RRS DISCOVERY. The Royal Mint adds that it includes icy landmasses and a partial map of the region.
The edge is milled and carries the incuse inscription DESIGNED FOR ADVENTURE, a reference to the ship having been built for the purpose. The obverse has the portrait of the King by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date 2025.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The base-metal coin was sold singly, struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard in a pack describing the history of the vessel. The Royal Mint has published no figure for it. A loose coin has come out of one of those packs and should be checked for handling marks.
The Royal Mint also issued silver proof, silver proof piedfort and gold proof editions. The silver proof is a limited edition of 1,500.
The Royal Mint's link with the ship is older than the coin: it made the original Polar Medal of 1904, whose reverse shows Discovery in a design by Ernest Gillick. Breeze's other ship of 2025 is the HMS Belfast £2.
