History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III National Gallery. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The National Gallery £2 marks the 200th anniversary of the gallery, which opened in 1824 after the House of Commons agreed to buy the banker John Julius Angerstein's collection of 38 paintings. The pictures were first shown at his house in Pall Mall, and the building in Trafalgar Square opened in 1838.
The Royal Mint revealed the design on 28 December 2023 as one of five commemoratives for its 2024 annual sets, which went on sale on 2 January 2024. On 18 April 2024 it released the coin individually, timed to the gallery's bicentenary celebrations.
This is a collector coin. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage data, which lists no commemorative £2 struck for circulation after 2016, and the Royal Mint has published no figure for the number sold.
The reverse is by Edwina Ellis, a designer, engraver and printmaker. It shows the front of the gallery, with its dome and Corinthian columns, under the inscription 200 YEARS OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY. Ellis told the Royal Mint that she worked digitally, drawing the gridded stonework and the scales of the dome line by line, and that she separated the dome from the pediment and rejoined them where they sat well in the circle.
The edge is milled and reads MAIORVM GLORIA POSTERIS LVMEN EST, "the glory of our ancestors is a light to our descendants". The Royal Mint says the phrase is inscribed on the ceiling above the main staircase in the gallery's Wilkins Building. The obverse has the portrait of the King by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date 2024, so the denomination is on the portrait side.
