History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III HMS Belfast. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
HMS Belfast is the Royal Navy cruiser moored on the Thames in London, and this 2025 £2 is the first United Kingdom coin to show it. The Royal Mint issued the coin as a tribute to the ship and to those who served in it over 25 years of active duty, and developed it with the assistance of Imperial War Museums, which has run the ship since 1978.
The Royal Mint's own timeline gives the outline. The keel was laid at Harland & Wolff in Belfast in December 1936, the ship was launched on 17 March 1938 and commissioned on 5 August 1939. It took part in the sinking of the Scharnhorst at the Battle of North Cape in 1943, bombarded the Normandy beaches on D-Day and later served in the Korean War. It opened to the public in London on 21 October 1971.
The coin was not struck for circulation. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage data, which records no £2 coins of any design for 2025.
The reverse is by the sculptor Gary Breeze and, according to the Royal Mint, shows the warship as it appeared from the 1960s onwards. The proclamation describes it simply as a depiction of HMS Belfast accompanied by the inscription HMS BELFAST.
The edge is milled and carries the ship's motto in incuse letters: PRO TANTO QVID RETRIBVAMVS, with dots between the words. The Royal Mint translates it as "For so much, how shall we repay?"
The obverse has the portrait of the King by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date 2025. As on other recent commemorative £2 coins, the denomination is on the portrait side.
