History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III George Orwell. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The George Orwell £2 was announced by the Royal Mint on 13 January 2025 and went on sale two days later. It marks the 75th anniversary of the death of the writer, who died at University College Hospital on 21 January 1950, aged 46. The Royal Mint says it is the first time Orwell has been commemorated on a United Kingdom coin, and that the coin was created with the support of the Orwell Foundation.
Orwell was born Eric Blair in Bengal in 1903. The Royal Mint's account of his life singles out the six months he spent as a Republican volunteer in the Spanish Civil War, which fixed the opposition to totalitarianism that runs through Animal Farm and 1984.
The coin was not struck for circulation. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage data, which records no £2 coins of any design for 2025.
The reverse is by Henry Gray, whose earlier Royal Mint designs include the 2022 Alexander Graham Bell £2 and the 2023 Edward Jenner £2. At its centre is what looks like an eye but is in fact a camera lens, encircled by the words BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU from 1984, with the name GEORGE ORWELL.
Gray said the eye is deliberately not realistic: "it doesn't have eyelashes and things like that because I wanted it to be monocular. It's almost like a camera lens staring at you all the time, unblinking."
The edge is milled and carries a second line from the novel in incuse letters: THERE WAS TRUTH AND THERE WAS UNTRUTH. The obverse has the portrait of the King by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date 2025.
