About the 1902 1 Shilling - Edward VII

The 1902 1 Shilling - Edward VII is a circulating 1 shilling coin issued from 1902 to 1910, struck in 92.5% silver. It weighs 5.65g and measures 23.5mm across. Reverse design: Crowned lion passant atop crown dividing date, legend above, denomination below.

Mintage figures are recorded for 9 years between 1902 and 1910, 63,293,000 coins in all. 1905 is the scarcest date, with 488,300 struck. It is no longer legal tender (withdrawn 1990), so its value is to collectors only.

History and design

The shilling, twelve pence or one twentieth of a pound, was the workhorse of the silver coinage; the Royal Mint Museum notes that more shillings were struck in the nineteenth century than any other silver denomination. Edward VII's shillings were struck every year from 1902 to 1910 in sterling silver, 92.5 percent fine, the standard kept until 1920.

Output swung widely. Coin Hunter and Wikipedia agree on 488,390 for 1905, a fraction of any other date, and on 26,547,236 for 1910. The two disagree for 1902, where Coin Hunter gives 7,809,481 and Wikipedia 7,905,604. Shillings stayed in use long after the reign and were finally demonetised at the end of 1990.

The obverse is George William de Saulles's bare head of the King facing right. De Saulles, Engraver to the Royal Mint from 1893, produced the portrait used on all of Edward VII's coins and signed his work De S.

The reverse broke with the Victorian shilling. Tony Clayton describes it as a lion on a crown, a design that George V's shillings carried on unchanged until 1919.

Collecting notes

The 1905 is the key date. Clayton calls it very scarce, especially in top condition, so check the date carefully on any well preserved example. 1903 and 1904 are the next lowest dates at just over two million each. Matt proofs dated 1902 were issued in sets to mark the start of the new reign, some with the silver coins only and others with the gold as well. CoinVarieties notes that the sandblasted finish is easily disturbed, which keeps most surviving examples in middling proof grades.

Shillings remained legal tender as 5p pieces until 31 December 1990, and any Edwardian shilling still in use was valid currency until then. The Edward VII sixpence completes the smaller silver of the reign.
