About the 1902 6 Pence - Edward VII

The 1902 6 Pence - Edward VII is a circulating 6 pence coin issued from 1902 to 1910, struck in 92.5% silver. It weighs 2.83g and measures 19.3mm across. Reverse design: Crowned denomination within wreath (olive sprig on left, oak on right), date below.

Mintage figures are recorded for 9 years between 1902 and 1910, 62,688,600 coins in all. 1905 is the scarcest date, with 4,235,500 struck. It is no longer legal tender (withdrawn 1980), so its value is to collectors only.

History and design

The sixpence, half a shilling or one fortieth of a pound, was struck in every year of Edward VII's reign. Like all British silver coins until 1920 it was made of sterling silver, 92.5 percent fine. The reverse was left as it had been under Victoria, so only the portrait and legend changed with the new reign.

Coin Hunter's figures, drawn from the Coin Yearbook, total about 62.7 million for the nine dates. 1905 is the lowest at 4,235,556 and 1910 the highest at 12,490,724. For the coronation year the Mint also struck matt proofs dated 1902. The sixpence outlasted the reign by seventy years: it passed into decimal use as 2.5 new pence and was demonetised on 30 June 1980.

The obverse carries the bare head of Edward VII facing right by George William de Saulles, Engraver to the Royal Mint, with the legend EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP. De Saulles signed his coins De S.

The reverse shows the words SIX PENCE within a wreath, a crown above and the date below. The Royal Mint credits this design to Jean Baptiste Merlen. Wikipedia notes that the same reverse served under William IV, Victoria and Edward VII, apart from Victoria's short-lived 1887 issue.

Collecting notes

Tony Clayton finds no particularly rare dates in the Edward VII series, so the set is within reach. The lowest mintages are 1905 and 1904. The 1902 matt proof is a separate collector piece: Coin Hunter lists 15,123 of them against more than 6.3 million ordinary 1902 sixpences.

Sixpences of this reign are not found in change, as they have not been legal tender since 1980. The Edward VII shilling shares the portrait and was also struck as a 1902 matt proof.
