History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Royal Arms. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Royal Mint released this coin to collectors on 1 April 2015 and said the public could expect it in change from November that year. It called it the first new commemorative design on the £1 to carry the fifth portrait of the Queen, and one of the last designs for the round pound, since a new and more secure £1 was already planned for 2017.
The Royal Mint's figures give 129,616,985 struck for circulation. Only the first three round pounds have higher figures: the 1983 Royal Arms, the 1984 Thistle and the 1985 Leek. It is also more than four times the 29,580,000 Royal Shield pounds dated 2015. The two 2015 coins are the last round pounds in the Mint's circulating figures.
The 12-sided £1 followed on 28 March 2017 and round pounds lost legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The reverse is Timothy Noad's reworking of the Royal Arms: a quartered shield supported by a crowned English lion and a Scottish unicorn. The Royal Mint described Noad as a Herald Painter at the College of Arms and Scribe and Illuminator to the Crown Office at the House of Lords, who paints the Royal Arms in traditional form many times a year and had long wanted to make his own version.
The Mint says he looked to the Hanoverian and Victorian periods. On a visit to Greenwich he saw the arms on the side of a naval drum from Nelson's time, with the lion and unicorn given much more prominence than usual, and judged that the treatment would work on something as small as a coin.
The milled edge reads DECUS ET TUTAMEN, the inscription used on the first Royal Arms pound of 1983. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Royal Mint designer Jody Clark.
