History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – London. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The London pound opened a set of four round pounds for the capital cities of the United Kingdom, and it represents England. The Royal Mint announced it on 5 March 2010, first in gold and silver. Belfast followed later that year, and Cardiff and Edinburgh in 2011.
The Royal Mint's figures give 2,635,000 London coins struck for circulation. Only two of the 41 round £1 entries from 1983 to 2015 are lower, and both belong to the same series: Edinburgh at 935,000 and Cardiff at 1,615,000. Belfast had 6,205,000. In the same year 57,120,000 pounds of the standard Royal Shield design were struck, so the London coin was a small fraction of the 2010 pounds.
Round pounds lost their legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The series was the first United Kingdom coin work by Stuart Devlin, Goldsmith and Jeweller to the Queen, who had designed coins for many other countries. Each reverse shows the arms of all four capitals with one highlighted, on shields that Devlin made round to match the coin. The Mint explained that concentric shapes spread out from the central badge to stand for the influence each city has on the others and on the world.
Devlin said: "Representing the four capital cities, in a way that brings them together was a challenge, not least because capital cities are so politically sensitive and emotive."
The London badge is the arms of the Corporation of the City of London, the Square Mile. It shows the cross of St George with an upright sword in the top left quarter, the sword being the symbol of the City's patron saint, St Paul. The name LONDON and ONE POUND accompany the design.
The milled edge carries the motto of the arms, DOMINE DIRIGE NOS, "Lord, direct us". The obverse has the portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
