History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Edinburgh. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Edinburgh £1 is one of four round pounds showing the capital cities of the United Kingdom. Belfast and London were issued in 2010, Cardiff and Edinburgh in 2011. They circulated alongside the standard Royal Shield £1 of the same years.
The Royal Mint's figures give 935,000 Edinburgh coins struck for circulation. That is the lowest figure for any round £1 design and the only one below a million. The other three in the series had 1,615,000 (Cardiff), 2,635,000 (London) and 6,205,000 (Belfast), and 25,415,000 Royal Shield pounds were struck with the 2011 date. The first round pound of 1983 had 443,053,510.
Round pounds were replaced by the 12-sided £1 from 28 March 2017 and lost their legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The reverse is by Stuart Devlin, described by Change Checker as Goldsmith and Jeweller to the Queen. The Royal Mint's description is of the official badges of the capital cities of the United Kingdom, with the badge of Edinburgh being the principal focus. Change Checker describes the central badge as Edinburgh Castle on its rock, with three flags flying from the towers. It represents Scotland in the series.
The milled edge carries the Latin words NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA, translated as "without the Lord, in vain". Each of the four coins has its own edge inscription. The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin is nickel-brass, like all round pounds.
