The 1902 1 Florin - Edward VII is a circulating 1 florin coin issued from 1902 to 1910, struck in 92.5% silver. It weighs 11.31g and measures 28.5mm across. Reverse design: Standing figure of Britannia on ship's bow holding trident in the right hand and shield bearing the Union flag in the left, legend around, date below.

Mintage figures are recorded for 9 years between 1902 and 1910, 33,712,900 coins in all. 1905 is the scarcest date, with 1,187,500 struck. It is no longer legal tender (withdrawn 1993), so its value is to collectors only.

History and design

Edward VII came to the throne in 1901, and his new silver coinage was set out by a proclamation of 13 January 1902. The florin, worth two shillings or a tenth of a pound, was struck every year from 1902 to 1910 in sterling (.925) silver, the standard used for the florin until 1919.

The florin and half crown had long been confused, being close in size and value. The Royal Mint Museum records that the new florin was given a standing Britannia to make the two coins, in the official words, as dissimilar as possible. The design did not last: George V's florins went back to heraldic shields.

Coin Hunter's year pages give 33,413,976 florins across the nine dates. 1905 is the lowest at 1,187,596, followed by 1903 at 1,995,298, while 1906 peaked at 6,910,128. Wikipedia agrees on every date except 1902 and 1903.

George William de Saulles, the Mint's engraver, created both sides. His bare-headed portrait of the King faces right, signed De S below the neck, with the legend EDWARDVS VII D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP.

The reverse shows Britannia standing on the prow of a ship, holding a trident in her right hand and resting her left on a shield, a windswept figure that Wikipedia notes probably drew on de Saulles's British trade dollar of 1895. ONE FLORIN TWO SHILLINGS runs around, with the date below and a milled edge. The Royal Mint Museum notes the model is thought to have been Lady Susan Hicks-Beach, daughter of the Master of the Mint.

Varieties and errors

For the 1902 coronation, florins were struck as matt proofs for the proof sets, with a frosted surface instead of a mirror finish. No other recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

Collecting notes

Tony Clayton notes that most dates are difficult to find in uncirculated condition, and that the date stands so proud of the field that on worn coins it is often completely eroded. Check that the date can actually be read before relying on a seller's attribution, and treat 1903 and 1905 as the dates to look for.

Florins circulated as 10p pieces after decimalisation and were withdrawn when the large 10p ceased to be legal tender at the end of June 1993. Worn Edwardian florins were long gone from change by then, and none can be spent today. The Edward VII half crown is the companion coin the Britannia design was meant to set apart.
