One row for each year the 1 Florin - Victoria 3rd portrait was struck. Prices are medians of verified sold listings matched to that year from the listing: circulated is worn condition up to Extremely Fine, uncirculated is About Uncirculated or better. A count in brackets means fewer than three sales behind the figure; a grey figure marked "type" is the median across every year, shown where that year has no sale of its own yet; years with no sales yet fill in as sales are recorded. Most types have been searched year by year only since October 2026, so later years are still filling in. Use the grade table below for a price by condition across all years.

Common questions
How much is the 1893 1 Florin - Victoria worth?
Verified sold prices for the 1893 1 Florin - Victoria run from £11.90 to £1,661 across 19 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one. Its silver content is worth about £13.43 at today's spot price, which puts a floor under its value.
Which Old Head florin dates are hardest to find?
Tony Clayton says florins dated 1894 and 1901 are slightly more difficult to find. By the collector mintages, 1893 is the lowest at 1,666,103, with 1897 and 1894 close behind, while 1900 reached 5,528,630.
Who designed the 1893 florin?
Thomas Brock modelled the veiled portrait of the Queen, and George William de Saulles cut the dies from it. The reverse of three crowned shields within the Garter was designed by the painter Edward Poynter, who supervised its reduction for coining.
Why does the Old Head florin say TWO SHILLINGS?
The Jubilee coins had been criticised for leaving the value off, and under the designs chosen by the Committee on the Design of Coins every denomination below the crown stated its value. The florin now read ONE FLORIN TWO SHILLINGS.
Is an 1893 to 1901 florin legal tender?
No. Florins passed as 10p after decimalisation but were demonetised at the end of June 1993 with the old large 10p coins, according to the Royal Mint Museum and Wikipedia.
How do I identify the 1893 1 Florin - Victoria?
Check the weight 11.31g and diameter 28.5mm and the metal (92.5% silver) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
Boehm's Jubilee portrait was unpopular, and in February 1891 a Committee on the Design of Coins was appointed. It chose Thomas Brock's veiled portrait of the Queen. The Royal Mint Museum records that the committee also proposed a different portrait for the florin, to tell it apart from the half crown, but the Queen dismissed the idea that anyone would look at the head to do so. Instead the florin was made slightly smaller, at 28.5 mm.
A proclamation of 30 January 1893, published in the London Gazette on 14 February, made the new designs current. The Old Head florin was struck every year to 1901, and Wikipedia notes that 1901-dated coins continued until Edward VII's coinage was ready in May 1902. Collector references give 1,666,103 for 1893, rising to 5,528,630 in 1900, about 25.65 million in all.
Brock's portrait shows the Queen in later life, with a small diadem partly covered by a veil, and his initials TB below the truncation. The legend VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP was the first on British coins to include IND IMP, Empress of India.
The reverse, by Edward Poynter, is set out in the proclamation as two royal sceptres in saltire behind three crowned shields bearing the arms of England, Scotland and Ireland. Between them are the rose, thistle and shamrock, with the Garter and its motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE beneath, and the words ONE FLORIN TWO SHILLINGS with the date. The edge is milled.
Collecting notes
The 1893 florin was also struck as a proof for that year's proof sets. Tony Clayton finds 1894 and 1901 slightly harder to locate than the other dates, and none of the nine years had fewer than 1.6 million coins struck. The sterling silver content (.925) is the same as on all Victorian florins.
Florins were treated as 10p from 1971 and were demonetised at the end of June 1993. The Edward VII florin that followed had a standing Britannia instead, chosen to make it as unlike the half crown as possible. The matching coin of this reign is the Old Head half crown.
