History and design
The crown, worth five shillings or a quarter of a pound, had long been a large coin that, from the 19th century, did not circulate well. Wikipedia notes that one was usually struck in a new monarch's coronation year, and Tony Clayton records that after Victoria the crown was really only struck for commemorative or collectors' purposes. Edward VII issued just one, dated 1902, the year of his coronation.
Wikipedia and Coin Hunter both give a mintage of 256,020 in sterling (.925) silver. The coin was struck alongside a new silver coinage whose designs were fixed by a proclamation of 13 January 1902. Matt proofs were also made for the coronation proof sets.
The obverse carries the bare-headed portrait of the King facing right by George William de Saulles, signed De S below the neck. The proclamation sets the legend in full as EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP.
The reverse shows St George armed and on horseback, attacking the dragon with a sword, with the broken spear on the ground and the date below. Clayton records that the crowns of 1887 to 1901 carried Benedetto Pistrucci's version of this scene. The edge is lettered DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI, followed by the year of the reign in Roman numerals.
Varieties and errors
The coronation proof sets of 1902 contained a matt proof crown, with a textured, non-reflective surface instead of the highly polished finish usual on proofs. No other recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
Collecting notes
MJ Hughes Coins describes two coronation sets: an 11-coin set of the silver coins, Maundy money, sovereign and half sovereign, and a 13-coin set that added the £2 and £5. The matt proof crown belongs to both, so check whether a matt example has come out of a set.
Check that the edge lettering is complete and legible on any example. All crowns struck since 1818 remain legal tender at 25p, according to Wikipedia citing the Royal Mint, but they are collected, not spent.
