Quick answer A coin collection app is software that catalogues the coins a collector owns, stores photographs and purchase details, and estimates current market value. MyCoinage is a free, browser-based coin collecting app for UK and US collectors. It runs on any phone, tablet or laptop with no App Store download, syncs your inventory across every device you sign in on, and uses realised auction sales from 4,704+ British coins to show what your collection is actually worth today.

Why a browser coin app beats a native download

The traditional advice is that an app means a store download. For a coin collection app, that advice is twenty years out of date. A modern browser handles everything a native app does: offline caching, push notifications, home-screen installation, camera access for uploading photographs, and hardware-accelerated graphics. You lose the install step and gain four things that matter more.

  • No app-store gatekeeping. Price updates, new coins and fixes ship the moment they are ready, not when Apple or Google get round to reviewing them.
  • One collection, every device. Sign in on a phone, a tablet, a partner’s laptop or a library PC and see the same inventory. No cable, no iCloud backup, no restore.
  • Your data lives on our servers. Losing a phone does not lose your collection. Replacing a phone does not require a backup-and-restore dance.
  • Zero install friction. A coin you spot at a fair goes into your collection in under a minute, on a device you already have.

If you still want a home-screen shortcut, MyCoinage installs as a Progressive Web App on iOS and Android in two taps. The Royal Mint and the British Museum both publish data the site links back to, so you can cross-check a coin’s specifications without leaving your collection view.

Where the app gets its price data

A coin app is only as good as its prices. MyCoinage only publishes realised sales, the figure at which a coin actually changed hands at auction or on a verified marketplace. We never use asking prices, dealer retail or estimates. Sources include:

  • eBay UK & US: verified sold listings only, continuously refreshed.
  • Spink, Baldwin’s, Noonans: hammer prices from UK auction-house catalogues, weekly.
  • Onebid: European auction aggregator, hammer prices only.
  • Member submissions: sales logged by collectors, passed through an admin queue before publication.

Each record goes through an automated verifier that checks denomination, country, grade and outlier range. Flagged rows are held for manual review. The result: when the app shows your 1937 crown is worth £120 in Extremely Fine, that figure came from coins actually selling at that grade, not a guess. The grading guide explains the scales, and every coin page shows the source list for the prices above it.

Coin collection app FAQ

Is MyCoinage a coin collection app or a website?
Both. MyCoinage runs as a standard website in any modern browser, and it also installs as a Progressive Web App (PWA) on iOS and Android. When you tap "Add to Home Screen" on a mobile browser, it behaves like a native app: a home-screen icon, full-screen display, push notifications on supported platforms, and the catalogue available offline.
Why choose a browser-based coin collecting app over an App Store download?
Three practical reasons. First, no install friction: you are tracking coins ten seconds after clicking the link, with no 80MB download. Second, no app-store gatekeeping: price updates, new coins and bug fixes ship the moment they are ready rather than waiting on Apple or Google review. Third, true cross-device sync: because your collection lives on our servers, every device you log in on shows the same inventory with no restore, no cable transfer and no lost data if a phone is replaced.
Is MyCoinage a free coin collection app?
Yes. The free tier covers up to 25 coins, the full 4,700+ coin catalogue, daily price updates, series completion grids and the community leaderboard. No credit card required. Pro (from £2.99/month) removes the 25-coin cap, unlocks grade-by-grade price graphs on every coin, adds insurance-grade PDF export and enables price alerts.
Does the coin collection app work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The site is fully responsive and works on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, Samsung Internet and Firefox mobile. You can add coins, upload photos, view price history, export PDFs and manage a watchlist on any of them. Installing the PWA on your home screen gives a native-app feel without going through the App Store or Play Store.
Can I use the coin inventory app offline?
Partly. The service worker caches the coin catalogue and your most recent collection view so you can browse them on the Tube or a plane. Adding new coins, uploading photos and price lookups need a connection. When you reconnect, any pending changes sync automatically.
How does MyCoinage compare to Coiniverse, Numi and Spencer Pages apps?
Coiniverse, Numi and the Spencer Pages Coin Collection app are native mobile downloads with worldwide catalogues. They work well for casual global collectors. MyCoinage is purpose-built for UK coins, backed by realised UK auction sales rather than estimates, runs in any browser without install, and offers insurance-grade PDF export. If your focus is British coins and you want live market data rather than catalogue values, MyCoinage is the tighter fit.
Can I import my existing coin collection from a spreadsheet?
Yes. MyCoinage accepts CSV uploads with columns for denomination, year, mint mark, grade, purchase price and notes. If you have been tracking coins in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, one upload migrates the whole collection. Unmatched entries land in a review queue so you can map them to catalogue coins in a few clicks.
Is my coin inventory private?
By default, yes. Your collection is private until you opt in to a public profile from Settings. Individual coins can also be marked private so they never appear on a public profile or in leaderboard totals, useful for high-value pieces you do not want to advertise.
Does MyCoinage track US coins too?
The catalogue is strongest on British coins, but US coverage is growing: Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Walking Liberty halves, Lincoln cents, Buffalo nickels and Standing Liberty quarters are in the database today. Request-a-coin lets you submit anything missing, usually added within 48 hours.
What happens to my collection if I cancel Pro?
Nothing is deleted. Cancelling from Account Settings moves you to the free tier at the end of your billing period, with your full inventory preserved. You lose Pro-only features (full price graphs, PDF export, alerts) but every coin, photo and purchase record stays. You can resubscribe at any time.
