Is there a Royal Mint Halloween coin?

Not one sold as a Halloween coin. No UK coin named or marketed by the Royal Mint for 31 October could be found.

What exists are coins for literary anniversaries and characters that suit the season. The two best known are both £2 coins, and one can still be found in change.

The 2018 Frankenstein £2

The Royal Mint issued this £2 for the bicentenary of Mary Shelley's novel, first published in 1818. The reverse by Thomas Docherty writes "Frankenstein" in lettering styled like an ECG heartbeat trace, and the edge reads A SPARK OF BEING.

It did not circulate. The Frankenstein £2 coin page shows 60,399 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 44 recorded sales in that grade between £15.08 and £45.00, with a 90-day median of £25.99.

The 2016 Shakespeare Tragedies £2

This is the spooky coin you can actually find in change. John Bergdahl's reverse shows a skull beside a rose, and the edge reads WHAT A PIECE OF WORK IS A MAN.

The Royal Mint struck 4,615,000 for circulation, so it is not rare. The Shakespeare Tragedies £2 page shows circulated examples selling for a 90-day median of £4.44, with the lowest sales at £2.51. The full set of three is covered in the Shakespeare £2 guide, and wider price context is in the £2 coin values guide.

Is there a Dracula coin from the Royal Mint?

Yes. The search phrase "dracula coin royal mint" points to a real product: the Royal Mint's Dracula 2025 1oz silver bullion coin, with a matching 1oz gold coin.

The silver coin has a £2 face value, is struck in 999 fine silver and measures 38.61mm. The reverse by Joel Iskowitz shows Count Dracula in his cape, surrounded by bats, with his castle behind him inside a full moon. The obverse portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings. The Royal Mint's page ties it to Bram Stoker's novel, which it calls a "timeless tale of gothic horror".

Trade press reports put the limits at 50,000 silver coins and 5,000 gold coins, and dealers describe it as the first coin in a Gothic Horror series. The Royal Mint's product page states neither.

It is a bullion coin, not a commemorative £2 like the Frankenstein coin. It is far larger than a circulating £2 and its price moves with silver. The Dracula 1oz silver coin page tracks recorded sales.

Frankenstein's Monster follows in 2026

A Royal Proclamation dated 3 June 2026 sets out a second pair of coins: a 1oz gold £100 and a 1oz silver £2 with "a depiction of Frankenstein's monster" and the inscription FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER. The silver coin has the same 38.61mm diameter as the Dracula coin.

A proclamation authorises a coin. It does not give a release date or a mintage, and no Royal Mint sales page for this coin could be found in early October 2026.

The other Dracula coins are from Gibraltar

A separate Dracula series exists and it is not a Royal Mint or UK issue. In 2022 Gibraltar issued a set of five 50p coins for the 125th anniversary of Bram Stoker's novel, struck by Tower Mint in London and sold to collectors in the UK.

Catalogue entries list designs including Dracula's face, a werewolf with bats, the Count in his coffin and his castle, each with a line from the novel. They were made in base metal, in coloured versions and in small runs of plated silver.

These carry Gibraltar's coat of arms and are not UK coins. Treat any "Royal Mint Dracula 50p" listing as a misdescription.

Is there a witch £2 coin?

No UK one. No Royal Mint £2 with a witch design was found, and none turned up among Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man or Gibraltar issues either. The phrase "witch 2 pound coin" most likely blends three real things.

  • Harry Potter 50p coins. The Royal Mint's 2022 and 2023 series includes a coin for Hogwarts, the fictional school of witchcraft and wizardry. They are 50p coins, not £2, and were sold to collectors. See the Harry Potter 50p guide.
  • Jersey's 2014 Macbeth £5. A silver proof from Jersey's Shakespeare set shows three ghostly figures with a crown and sword and a line from the play. The Jersey Macbeth £5 page lists 950 issued and no recorded sales.
  • Foreign and novelty pieces. Witch designs are sold as coins of other countries, for example a 2015 Niue 2 dollars catalogued as "Witch". The "2" in the denomination is dollars, not pounds.

If a listing offers a "witch £2", read the legend around the portrait. A UK coin names no country and gives the monarch's titles in abbreviated Latin. Any other name tells you who issued it.

Gothic coins UK: a different meaning

Search for "gothic coins" and you will also meet a Victorian classic that has nothing to do with horror. The Gothic crown of 1847 takes its name from its medieval revival style: a crowned bust of Queen Victoria with the legends on both sides in lower case Gothic lettering.

It was engraved by William Wyon, with the reverse design credited to William Dyce, and the issue was limited to 8,000 pieces.

It is also expensive. The 1847 Gothic crown page records 55 sales in Extremely Fine grade between £320 and £6,000, and 23 Uncirculated sales between £1,200 and £5,000.

Choosing a Halloween coin gift

Budget Sensible choice Why
Face value to £5 Shakespeare Tragedies £2 A real skull design that can be pulled from change or bought for a few pounds
£20 to £30 Frankenstein £2 in its Royal Mint pack Collector only, with a clear story and steady sold prices
Silver price plus a premium Dracula 1oz silver bullion coin A large, detailed Dracula design in fine silver
Four figures Gothic crown For a serious collector, not a novelty

Two cautions apply to any themed gift. Check sold prices, not asking prices, before you pay: the coin value checker explains how. And be wary of coloured or plated "Halloween coins" with no issuing country on them, which are usually medals or altered coins, not official issues.

More ideas for all budgets are in the guide to coin gifts.

Are Halloween coins legal tender?

The UK ones are. The Royal Mint states that "all UK coins, whether circulating or non-circulating, are authorised as 'legal tender' by Royal Proclamation". That covers the Frankenstein £2 and the Dracula bullion coins.

It does not make them spendable in practice. The same guidance says commemorative and bullion coins "will not officially enter general circulation" and that "banks and businesses are not required to accept them". Legal tender has a narrow technical meaning to do with settling debts.

The Gibraltar and Jersey coins are not UK coins, so that statement does not cover them.

What to do next

Check your change first. The Shakespeare Tragedies £2 is the one coin on this list that can still turn up there.

If you already own one of these coins, add it to your collection from its page on MyCoinage, for example the Frankenstein £2, and track its value. It is free to start.
