History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Victoria Cross, soldier. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

This is the second of two 50p coins issued in 2006 for the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Cross, introduced on 29 January 1856. Where its companion shows the medal, this one shows what the medal is for.

The Royal Mint describes the Victoria Cross as the most prestigious award for gallantry that can be given to a British or Commonwealth serviceman. A recommendation normally starts with an officer at regimental level and has to be backed by three witnesses. The Mint gives 634 awards for the First World War and 182 for the Second.

The proclamation authorising both reverses came into force on 13 October 2005. The Royal Mint's figures give 10,000,500 of this design for circulation, a little fewer than the 12,087,000 of the medal coin. Of the eleven commemorative 50p designs dated 1998 to 2010 in those figures, seven were struck in smaller numbers and three in larger.

Clive Duncan designed the reverse. The official description is a soldier carrying a wounded comrade, with an outline of the Victoria Cross surrounded by a sunburst effect in the background. The value FIFTY PENCE is below.

The official description gives no name, battle or date. Unlike the medal coin, which carries the founding date and the letters VC, this one relies on the outline of the Cross behind the figures to state its subject.

The obverse has the portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, used on 50p coins from 1998 to 2015, with the date 2006 after the royal titles. The proclamation specifies a plain edge.
