History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Scouting Movement. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Scouting 50p was issued in 2007 for the centenary of the Scout movement. The Royal Mint traces the movement to 1907, when Robert Baden-Powell ran an experimental camp on Brownsea Island in Dorset, built around self-reliance and practical skills learned outdoors.
The royal proclamation setting out the design came into force on 11 October 2006 and names 2007 as the date for the obverse. The coin was struck for general circulation: the Royal Mint's figures give 7,710,750, alongside 11,200,000 Britannia 50p coins of the same date.
That puts it in the middle of its group. Of the eleven commemorative 50p designs dated 1998 to 2010 in the Royal Mint's figures, five were struck in smaller numbers and five in larger. Its nearest neighbour is the 2010 Girlguiding coin at 7,410,090.
Kerry Jones designed the reverse. A fleur-de-lis, the Scout emblem, is superimposed over a globe. Around it run the motto BE PREPARED, the dates 1907 and 2007 and the denomination FIFTY PENCE.
The Royal Mint singles out the motto as the feature of the coin. The proclamation prints each date with a dot on either side.
The obverse carries the portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley, used on 50p coins from 1998 to 2015, with the date after the royal titles. The proclamation specifies a plain edge.
