History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Stories of the Second World War. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Stories of the Second World War 50p is dated 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. The Royal Mint has commemorated wartime service before. This coin, it says, pays tribute to the millions of ordinary people who served Britain and the Commonwealth, from soldiers, sailors and airmen to the factory workers who produced munitions. It was made with the help of Imperial War Museums, and the packaging retells the experiences of people who served at home and overseas.

The Mint revealed the design on 27 December 2024 as one of five commemorative coins in its 2025 Annual Set, on sale from 2 January 2025. Coin Hunter dates the individual release to 13 March 2025. It was not issued for circulation: the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list only the Atlantic Salmon 50p for 2025.

The reverse is by Timothy Noad, who has designed both coins and service medals. It shows three medals awarded for service in the war, the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal, above the inscription STORIES OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

Each original medal carried a reference to King George VI, and the Mint says each was recreated in minute detail using laser technology. The Star bears his crowned cypher and the War Medal his crowned portrait, both by Percy Metcalfe, while the Defence Medal has Humphrey Paget's uncrowned coinage portrait.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
