History and design
This £5 is the Royal Mint's memorial crown for Queen Elizabeth II, sold under the title Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It was authorised by a proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 13 September 2022, in the first year of the new reign, which came into force the next day. The proclamation covers the same design in gold, standard silver, silver piedfort, platinum piedfort and cupro-nickel.
It was sold to collectors and was never issued into change. The Royal Mint's memorial sales page lists 119,954 Brilliant Uncirculated coins in the standard pack, 41,537 in trade packaging and 3,192 in a coin and stamp set, a total of 164,683. That is a large figure for a modern crown, though below the 264,721 standard packs of the Platinum Jubilee £5 earlier in 2022.
The reverse shows two portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of two portraits of Her Late Majesty accompanied by her Royal Cypher and the inscription ELIZABETH REGINA with the dates 1926 and 2022. The Royal Mint credits the design to John Bergdahl and The Royal Mint.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2022. So the coin shows the late Queen on one side and her successor on the other.
On the cupro-nickel coin the edge is milled. The proclamation gives the precious-metal coins a plain edge with the incuse inscription ELIZABETH II DEVOTED TO YOUR SERVICE, a detail that does not appear on the base-metal crown.
Collecting notes
With more than 160,000 sold, this crown is far more plentiful than most £5 issues of the period. Coins kept in the Royal Mint pack or in the coin and stamp set are the ones to look for, since loose crowns soon show handling marks on the portraits.
The precious-metal versions sold in far smaller numbers: 22,491 silver proofs in the standard pack, 4,956 silver piedforts, 1,140 gold proofs and 66 platinum piedforts, with extra trade and stamp set packs listed for some of them. The edge lettering is the quickest way to tell a precious-metal coin from the cupro-nickel crown.
The coin is legal tender for any amount, but the Royal Mint notes that "while crowns are legal tender, banks are not required to accept them".
