History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – XVII Commonwealth Games - Wales. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The 2002 Commonwealth Games Wales £2 was issued for the XVII Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester in 2002. The Royal Mint struck four versions of one design, for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, under a single royal proclamation given on 18 July 2001. The only difference between them is a small national flag.
The Royal Mint's figures give 588,500 Wales coins for circulation. Within the set only Northern Ireland is lower, at 485,500, with England at 650,500 and Scotland at 771,750. Across every circulating £2 in the Mint's published figures the Wales coin has the second lowest mintage, and the Mint ranks it second in its own list of the rarest £2 coins. In the same year 13,024,750 standard Technology £2 coins were struck.
The reverse, by Matthew Bonaccorsi, shows an athlete in motion holding a banner high. The upper part of the banner is cut into fine parallel lines that suggest the lanes of a track or swimming pool. The inscription XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002 and the value, written as £2, are in front of the figure. Behind it is a small circular cartouche with the flag of Wales and its dragon.
The edge is milled and carries the incuse inscription SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP MANCHESTER 2002. On the obverse is the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF. The outer ring is nickel-brass and the centre cupro-nickel.
