History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – London Underground Logo. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The London Underground opened in 1863 as the world's first underground railway. For its 150th anniversary in 2013 the Royal Mint issued two £2 coins, both authorised by a single royal proclamation given on 17 October 2012. This is the Roundel coin; the other shows a Tube train.

Transport for London announced on 24 January 2013 that a limited number of both coins would be issued that week from selected Tube stations, with larger quantities going into general circulation later in the year. The Royal Mint's figures record 1,560,000 Roundel coins struck for circulation. That is 130,000 fewer than the Train coin, and twelve circulating £2 issues in the Mint's figures are lower.

The reverse is by Edwina Ellis, a printmaker who had contributed to the Art on the Underground project. It shows the Underground roundel set at an angle, with UNDERGROUND across the bar and the anniversary dates 1863 above and 2013 below. The roundel first appeared on station platforms in 1908, and Edward Johnston added the Underground's own typeface to the bar in 1920. The Royal Mint says Ellis used that Johnston typeface for the coin's lettering.

The edge is milled with the incuse inscription MIND THE GAP.

The obverse carries the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. The reverse has no statement of value, so TWO POUNDS appears on the obverse with the legend ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF.
