History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – 75th VE Day. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The VE Day £2 marks 75 years since Victory in Europe Day, 8 May 1945, the public holiday declared after news of Germany's surrender. The Royal Mint issued it in 2020 in association with Imperial War Museums, and says sales of the coin support the museums' work.
The design was authorised by a royal proclamation given on 8 October 2019, which paired it with the Agatha Christie £2 as part of the 2020 series.
This was a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures have no entry for it, and for 2020 they record no £2 coins struck for circulation at all. The Mint sold it as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin with an unlimited maximum mintage, and as silver proof, silver proof piedfort and gold proof editions.
The reverse is by Dominique Evans, a graphic designer at the Royal Mint. The proclamation describes a woman holding a newspaper aloft in a celebrating crowd, set against the backdrop of the word VICTORY, with the inscription VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY and the dates 1945 and 2020.
The Mint says the design puts people at the heart of the coin and that the rays from its centre evoke a sense of hope. Coin World quotes Evans as saying the rays "evoke search lights, a familiar sight in the skies during wartime, except here they represent rays of hope".
The edge is grained, with JUST TRIUMPH AND PROUD SORROW in incuse letters. The obverse carries the fifth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, with 2 POUNDS at the end of the legend.
