History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III Sir Winston Churchill. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Churchill £2 of 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Winston Churchill, who was born at Blenheim Palace on 30 November 1874. The Royal Mint revealed it on 28 December 2023 as one of five commemorative designs for its 2024 annual sets, which went on sale on 2 January 2024.

It was never issued for circulation. The coin is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage data, which lists no commemorative £2 struck for circulation after 2016. It was also never sold singly: the Royal Mint says it is exclusively available through the 2024 annual sets and a group of Churchill collector sets. No figure for the number made has been published.

The reverse is by Natasha Seaward, a graphic designer at the Royal Mint. It is a portrait of Churchill as a young man in 1895, the year he joined the cavalry, in the uniform of the 4th Queen's Own Hussars. Around it runs the inscription 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF WINSTON CHURCHILL, with the dates 1874 and 1965 on either side of the portrait.

Seaward explained the choice of a young Churchill: "I wanted to portray a side of him less known to the public and therefore chose a portrait from his time serving in the 4th Queen's Own Hussars."

The edge is milled with the incuse inscription PAVE THE WAY FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM, which the Royal Mint says comes from a remark Churchill made in late 1953, during his second term as prime minister. The obverse has the portrait of the King by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date 2024.
