History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III English Rose. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

This is the definitive £2 of King Charles III, which the Royal Mint calls the National Flowers £2. It is one of eight new designs unveiled in early October 2023 for every denomination from the 1p to the £2, replacing the Britannia £2 of the previous reign. Production of the new coins began on 2 November 2023, and the Royal Mint said that the 50p would be released first, with other denominations to enter circulation from 2024 in line with demand.

For the £2 that has not yet happened in the Royal Mint's figures. Its mintage data lists the coin with none struck for circulation dated 2023 and none dated 2024, and has no £2 entry for 2025. The last £2 coins it records for circulation are 4,030,000 Britannia coins dated 2022. Every National Flowers £2 so far has therefore come from a collector set.

The reverse shows the plants of the four nations: a rose for England, a daffodil for Wales, a thistle for Scotland and a shamrock for Northern Ireland, with the inscription 2 POUNDS. Behind them is a repeating pattern of three interlocking C's, shared by all eight coins and taken from the cypher of Charles II. The proclamation calls the design the floral symbol of the United Kingdom and names the fourth plant as clover. The Royal Mint credits the reverse to the Royal Mint, with no individual named, and says the coins were created with the support of the Royal Horticultural Society and the RSPB.

The edge is milled with the incuse inscription IN SERVITIO OMNIUM, Latin for "In the service of all". The Royal Mint says the King chose it himself, from his inaugural address of 9 September 2022. The obverse carries the portrait by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III DEI GRA REX FID DEF and the date.
