History and design
This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – J - Jubilee. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
J is for Jubilee in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, the 26 ten pence designs revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. It does not mark one particular anniversary. It treats the royal jubilee itself as a British institution, alongside subjects such as cricket and the double decker bus.
The Royal Mint's page for the coin is about street parties as much as royalty. It says a jubilee gives the country a reason to get out the bunting, and that Elizabeth II and Victoria are the only two British monarchs to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee. Its example is June 2012, when more than 2 million people took part in street parties and a pageant of some 1,000 boats sailed on the Thames. Change Checker adds the Sapphire Jubilee of 2017.
The Mint's circulating figures are 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, which comes to 304,000.
The reverse shows a royal carriage above a large letter J. Change Checker calls it a Jubilee Carriage, and Coin Hunter identifies it as the Gold State Coach.
The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the denomination and date, so the Queen whose jubilees the coin recalls is on the other side. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
