History and design

This is the plain, everyday 10p of 2015 to 2022, as opposed to the A to Z letter coins that share its portrait. It came about through a change of obverse only. The Royal Mint unveiled a new portrait of the Queen on 2 March 2015, and its figures for that year give 119,000,000 10p coins with the old portrait and 91,900,000 with the new.

The Mint struck 135,380,000 for 2016 and 33,300,000 for 2017. Its figures then show no standard 10p for 2018 or 2019, the two years in which the only circulating 10p coins were the 26 letter designs. The shield returned with 45,347,846 for 2020, 71,200,000 for 2021 and 38,000,000 for 2022, for a total of 415,127,846 across six dates.

These are modest numbers by the standard of the years just before: the fourth portrait 10p of 2014 alone has a figure of 490,202,020.

Matthew Dent's 10p shows the top left of the Shield of the Royal Arms, one piece of the whole shield that his 1p to 50p designs make up together. The proclamation describes it as a section of the Royal Arms showing elements of the first quartering, accompanied by the words TEN PENCE.

The obverse has Jody Clark's portrait of the Queen wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem. Clark, a Royal Mint engraver, was 33 when the design was selected in a closed competition. The edge is milled. Every coin of this type is nickel-plated steel, the metal used for all new 10p coins since January 2012.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

By mintage the low dates are 2017 and 2022. In the Royal Mint's figures only two small 10p dates of the Queen's reign are lower than 2017: the 9,720,000 Ironside design coins of 2008 and the 11,600,030 of 2012. None of the six dates is hard to find.

A 10p dated 2018 or 2019 with the shield on it did not come from circulation. Collector references record those dates as made for annual sets only. The 10p coins that did circulate in those years are the letter designs, beginning with A for Angel of the North, which have the words TEN PENCE on the obverse instead of the reverse.

For 2015, check the portrait: the older effigy belongs to the fourth portrait steel 10p. The 10p is legal tender for amounts up to £5 and all of these dates remain in use.
