History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – WWF. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The WWF 50p was issued in 2011 to mark 50 years of WWF, the conservation charity founded in 1961 by a group of wildlife experts that included Sir Peter Scott. The royal proclamation for the coin came into force on 14 October 2010.
The Royal Mint announced it in March 2011, when limited edition gold and silver versions had already been struck, and said a circulating coin would follow later in the year. The Mint's figures give a circulating mintage of 3,400,000.
That is a modest figure for a commemorative 50p but not a scarce one. Every one of the 29 London 2012 Olympic 50p designs, which share its 2011 date, was struck in smaller numbers, and the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p stands at 210,000.
The reverse is by Matthew Dent, the graphic designer responsible for the definitive coin designs introduced in 2008. It has 50 small icons arranged in a circular pattern around the WWF panda logo, with the date 2011 below. The proclamation describes them as symbolising projects and programmes the organisation supported over its first 50 years.
Among the icons are a dolphin, gorilla, rhino, polar bear and butterfly. Others, such as a car, a wind turbine, a coffee bean and a human footprint, stand for people's effect on the natural world. Dent said: "The challenge from my perspective was simplifying the shapes whilst keeping them distinctive, and of course, squeezing them all in."
The reverse has no denomination. FIFTY PENCE appears on the obverse beneath the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The edge is plain.
