History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Wrestling. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Wrestling 50p is the second scarcest coin in the series of 29 struck for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The series gave each sport its own reverse, chosen through a competition open to the public. The proclamation describing this design came into force on 12 May 2010, and the coin is dated 2011.

The Royal Mint's figures give a circulating mintage of 1,129,500. Only the Football coin is lower, at 1,125,500, a gap of just 4,000 coins. Judo follows at 1,161,500 and Triathlon at 1,163,500. The most common design, Archery, was struck in almost three times the number.

In the Royal Mint's October 2024 list of the ten rarest 50p coins in circulation, Wrestling was fourth, behind the 2023 Atlantic Salmon, the 2009 Kew Gardens and the Football coin.

The reverse is by Roderick Enriquez. The proclamation describes it as "two figures wrestling in a stadium", with the London 2012 logo above and 50 PENCE below.

The Royal Mint describes the scene as the moment a wrestler is thrown onto the mat, drawn as action silhouettes in a modern stadium. Individual raised dots stand for the watching crowd, and the mat is drawn undersized on purpose, to stress how close the two competitors are.

Enriquez told the Royal Mint Museum that he chose wrestling because it is "such a well-respected, historical sport, which represents both the modern and ancient Olympic Games". He said he was delighted to have won "especially as a Filipino-British national", and that he saw London 2012 as a Games hosted by people from many cultural backgrounds.

The obverse carries the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, in which she wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The edge is plain.
