History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Goalball. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Goalball 50p is one of 29 coins issued for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, one for each sport, with designs chosen through a competition open to the general public. All are dated 2011. Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by visually impaired athletes, and this is one of five coins in the series that carry the Paralympic logo.
The Royal Mint's figures give a circulating mintage of 1,615,500. That is the sixth lowest of the 29: only Football, Wrestling, Judo, Triathlon and Tennis are lower. It is also the lowest of the five Paralympic designs, below Table Tennis (1,737,500), Wheelchair Rugby (1,765,500), Boccia (2,166,000) and Archery (3,345,500).
When the Royal Mint listed the ten rarest 50p coins in circulation on 7 October 2024, the Goalball coin took tenth place.
The reverse is by Jonathan Wren. The proclamation describes it as "a goalball player throwing a ball", with the London 2012 Paralympic logo above and 50 PENCE below. Lines radiate from the ball to suggest movement.
The ball has a bell drawn on it. Wren told the Royal Mint Museum that he added it "to explain to people who don't know the sport the rules", since players track the ball by sound. He chose goalball because it is fast paced and he thought "it would work well as a bold, single image", with what he called "whiz lines" for the speed.
Wren entered late, after seeing an article in a London newspaper, and drew four designs across Olympic and Paralympic sports. He knew nothing about goalball at first and researched it from images online. He called being selected "a good legacy to leave to my children".
The obverse carries the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, in which she wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The edge is plain.
