History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pence - Charles III Oak Sprig. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Oak Tree Leaf 5p is the definitive 5p of King Charles III, one of eight new designs from the 1p to the £2 that the Royal Mint unveiled on 12 October 2023 on a theme of British plants and animals. The 5p was among the first of them to be struck when production began that November, alongside the £1 and the 50p.

The coins then waited almost two years. On 23 October 2025 the Mint announced that 23.2 million of the King's first 5p coins, all dated 2023, were entering circulation because of demand for the denomination. It was the third denomination with his portrait to circulate, after the 50p and £1, and the first change of design on a circulating 5p in 17 years.

The Royal Mint's figures show 32,400,000 dated 2023, none dated 2024 and 19,000,000 dated 2025. The Mint says the 2025 coin has the lowest mintage of any 5p, below the 24,308,000 of 1977. The 2023 figure is the fourth lowest in the Mint's data.

The reverse shows a sprig of oak, which the Royal Mint describes as a leaf taken from an oak tree, with the inscription 5 PENCE and a large numeral. Behind it is a repeating pattern of three interlocking C's that runs across all eight coins and refers to the cypher of Charles II. The Royal Mint says the oak signifies a rich habitat for biodiversity in British woodland, supporting more life than any other native tree species, and has a long association with monarchy: ancient kings of Britain and Roman emperors wore crowns of oak leaves.

The Mint credits the reverse to its own team, which worked with the Royal Mint Advisory Committee and external artists, with support from the RSPB and the Royal Horticultural Society. The obverse carries the King's coinage portrait by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III DEI GRA REX FID DEF and the date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.
