History and design
The Queen and Prince Philip were married on 20 November 1947, and their silver wedding in 1972 was marked with a crown. It was the first crown issued after decimalisation. The Royal Mint explains that the crown traditionally had a face value of five shillings, which became 25p in February 1971, and this coin was the first to be issued at the new value.
The Royal Mint's striking figures give 7,452,100 cupro-nickel coins struck to circulating standard. That is the lowest of the four 25p crowns issued between 1972 and 1981, though it is higher than the figure for any £5 crown in the Mint's table, which runs to 2008.
Arnold Machin designed both sides. The Royal Mint describes the reverse as the initials EP on a background of foliage, with the figure of Eros above the Royal Crown. The inscription around it names Elizabeth and Philip and gives the wedding date with the years 1947 and 1972.
The obverse is Machin's portrait of the Queen, the one used on decimal coins from 1968 to 1984. The edge is milled. No denomination appears anywhere on the coin, which followed the practice of earlier crowns.
Collecting notes
The Royal Mint Museum notes that the crown, because of its large size, found its role as a commemorative coin, particularly of royal anniversaries. The Royal Mint likewise describes crowns as souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use, so wear from circulation is not the usual concern. On a coin this large, look instead for contact marks in the open fields and on the portrait.
The coin is legal tender at 25p, but the Royal Mint points out that commemorative coins do not enter general circulation and banks and businesses need not accept them. It should not be confused with a £5 crown: the Mint raised the crown's face value in 1990, and the later coins state their value.
A silver proof version was also made for collectors. The other 25p crowns are the 1977 Silver Jubilee, the 1980 Queen Mother and the 1981 Royal Wedding issues.
